There comes a point in almost every conversation I have with women where I hear a familiar phrase:
“I’ll focus on myself after…”
After the kids go back to school.
After this busy season at work.
After vacation.
After the holidays.
After life settles down.
The truth is, life rarely slows down on its own.
There will always be another responsibility, another commitment, another person who needs something from you. If we’re constantly waiting for the “perfect time” to prioritize our health, that time may never come.
August feels like a natural opportunity to pause and reset. As routines begin to return and the pace of summer starts to shift, we have a chance to ask ourselves an important question:
Have I been caring for myself as well as I care for everyone else?
For many women, the honest answer is “not really.”
And that’s understandable.
Many of us have spent years putting our families, careers, and loved ones first. We become so accustomed to caring for everyone around us that caring for ourselves can begin to feel uncomfortable – or even selfish.
But here’s something I want you to remember:
Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself and for the people who depend on you.
When most people hear the words self-care, they picture spa days, massages, or relaxing weekends away.
While those things can certainly be enjoyable, true self-care is much more foundational.
It’s nourishing your body with wholesome foods.
It’s drinking enough water.
It’s choosing movement because it helps you feel strong and energized.
It’s protecting your sleep.
It’s taking a few slow breaths before reacting during a stressful moment.
It’s allowing yourself to rest without guilt.
These everyday choices may seem simple, but they have a profound impact on how your body functions.
Our bodies were designed to move between periods of activity and recovery. When we’re constantly rushing, multitasking, and caring for everyone else without taking time to recharge, our nervous system can remain in a prolonged state of stress.
Over time, that can influence sleep, digestion, hormone balance, energy, immune function, and our ability to recover from the demands of daily life.
The encouraging news is that the opposite is also true.
Small moments of intentional care send your body a different message.
They communicate safety.
They support recovery.
They create the conditions where resilience can grow.
The goal isn’t to overhaul your entire life overnight.
It’s to consistently choose small actions that remind your body it is worthy of care.
As we move into the final months of the year, I’d encourage you to think less about perfection and more about intention.
With approximately 120 days remaining this year, ask yourself:
- What is one habit that helps me feel my best?
- What have I been neglecting that my body has been asking for?
- How do I want to feel by the end of this year?
- What is one small step I can begin today?
Meaningful change doesn’t happen because of one perfect day.
It happens because of ordinary choices repeated with consistency.
Coach’s Challenge
This week, choose one simple act of self-care and commit to it every day.
Maybe it’s taking a 10-minute walk.
Preparing a nourishing breakfast.
Going to bed 30 minutes earlier.
Drinking more water.
Or simply taking five slow, intentional breaths before beginning your day.
Remember, your health isn’t built by doing everything perfectly.
It’s built by consistently honoring the needs of your body with kindness, patience, and intention.
Because when you care for yourself well, you show up more fully for every other role in your life.
Here’s to prioritizing your health—one intentional choice at a time.
